Learn How to HUSTLE HARDER
Kagi Media's new production course + music biz hybrid receives rave reviews
Kagi Media, producer of pro audio training products, like the wildly popular Mix It Like A Record, has released HUSTLE HARDER XXL, a music production course on DVD plus “in the trenches” music business documentary taught by multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated Producer/DJ David Shayman aka Disco D.
HUSTLE HARDER XXL was created by Shayman and Kagi Media and captures Shayman producing music for diverse genres and markets, negotiating deals, selling beats to major artists, developing various product brands and flying around the world as a headlining D.J.
"This insiders view of the hip hop / techno music business is amazing,” says Charles Dye, Grammy-winning engineer, mixer, producer (Lauryn Hill, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira), “David's studio chops are so on game. You see every step as he builds amazingly killer beats, skillfully pounding his MPC into submission, and then constructing monster arrangements in his DAW. You're not just looking over Disco's shoulder, you literally see every single move he makes with Kagi's clever MPC user's eye-view keystroke mapping, which teaches you step by step exactly how David builds his powerful grooves. And Shayman's core lesson, that you should always bring as much commitment and passion to your work as you are physically able, and then bring even more, should inspire us all.”
Production Course, where Shayman (Usher, 50 Cent, Trick Daddy) teaches beat making and music production. Including, start to finish, production coverage of sample acquisition and chopping, tracking beats, song construction, arranging, plug-ins and hardware DSP applications, tracking vocals, scratch recording, mixing and DAW mastering. The production coverage makes up the majority of runtime minutes and the user comes away with a firm understanding of how to produce modern music that “cuts well” in the boardroom, broadcast, club or car.
“Inspiring. Kagi Media definitely captured Disco D's vigor and enthusiasm for what he did. Once I started watching the DVD I was totally hooked and couldn't stop watching,” says David Franz (Instructor for Berklee College of Music and Bestselling pro audio author), “Disco D's energy is infectious, the content on the DVD, including the Pro Tools Sessions, MPC techniques and Samples is killer. This high-energy DVD will definitely inspire you to hustle harder in your own career and give you new motivation.”
Music Business Expose’, where Shayman shows the user the art of getting publicity, making contacts, publishing, cross selling, placing beats and a host of other music biz insights. Skills that come from the culmination of Shayman’s University of Michigan ROSS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, Marketing and Corporate Strategy degree, combined with his Detroit and Brooklyn street smarts, hard-earned business expertise and results driven social style.
“Hustle Harder XXL emerges triumphantly,” says RapReviews.com, “Self narrated by Shayman, the DVD is extremely informative from two separate standpoints - the running documentary, and a tutorial for aspiring producers and DJ's. Astounding technical knowledge of music and the industry”.
Lesson Files, which the user can launch, run and use on their system to follow along with the video lessons and practice the techniques Shayman teaches in the video. The DVD ROM Audio Assets are created by Shayman including Choice Samples (Hits, Synths, Drums, Guitar and Bass) he rendered from his own finished songs + AKAI MPC Sequence, Program and Song DATA and finished Pro Tools Sessions.
“Disco D really makes it seem possible for the viewer to follow in his footsteps with ease,” says illmuzik.com, “I felt more empowered after watching this. Really priceless stuff here for the producer on the come up”
Achievement Driven Messages spoken by Shayman engage the viewer in forms of analytic reasoning that challenge the user to think and act in different ways, push to accomplish big things and, most importantly, make friends along the way. Brimming with optimisms, Shaymans’ heart is as invigorating as it is persuasive, making the thematic elements of HUSTLE HARDER XXL a conduit to action.
Featuring 3.5 hours of video instruction, Pro Tools Sessions, AKAI MPC Data Files, Disco D Samples and Mega-Doses of uplifting attitude, HUSTLE HARDER XXL is undeniably a breakthrough course from Kagi Media and Disco D Productions....

Top Pros Endorse Mix It Like A Record
Many of the industry’s top audio professionals, including Roger Nichols, Eric Schilling, Juan Patiño, Kenny Gioia, Tommy Torres, and Ronny Cates have given the product their endorsement and praised Kagi Media and Charles Dye for successfully taking on the elusive subject of mixing.
“Great project and well done,” said 7 time Grammy-winner Roger Nichols, who’s credits include Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Frank Zappa. “Fantastic coverage of every step in the mixing process very informative insight into the provocative mixing style of Charles Dye.”
“Dye has tackled a topic I wouldn't even know where to begin with, and succeeds with Mix It Like A Record,” continues Eric Schilling, a 12 time Grammy winner who has worked with Elton John, Shakira, David Bowie, and Quincy Jones. “Its DVD and Pro Tools sessions create a framework for the subject of mixing that provide a path the younger engineer, producer or musician can take to jump-start their learning process, bypassing much trial and error.
Dye, a Grammy-winning engineer, mixer and producer in his own right, teaches the techniques that have brought him success with artists such as Lauryn Hill, Jon Bon Jovi, Sammy Hagar, and Julio Iglesias. He adeptly demonstrates how to get big sounding, record-quality mixes using the latest plug-ins, infuse emotion into the music with automation, and bring out the star-quality of the artist. The DVD features three hours of instruction and 40 Pro Tools TDM and LE sessions on the ROM layer.
Tommy Torres, a multi-platinum producer, artist and songwriter who has worked with Ricky Martin, Son by Four, Jaci Velasquez, and Paulina Rubio said, “The user gets to see and hear every step and decision Dye makes during a mix from beginning to end. You can actually hear what each of the processes is doing to the sound. I watched it with my studio headphones on and could hear every nuance of every plug-in.”
“However, Mix It Like A Record’s most outstanding achievement goes beyond the technical aspects and into the ‘mojo’ of mixing: the concepts, theory and feel of what to look for when mixing a song,” Torres continues. “I've always found those are the hardest things to put into words and yet Dye found several ways of explaining the concepts in a very, dare I say, INSPIRING way.”
Mix It Like A Record provides hundreds of tips and techniques on plug-ins by Digidesign, DUY, Focusrite, iZotope, Line6, McDSP, Princeton Digital, Sony Oxford, SoundToys, TL Labs, Unique Recording Software (URS), Universal Audio, and Waves.
“This DVD offers a nice emphasis on the need for a healthy blend between emotion and technique,” said Juan Patiño, Grammy nominated producer, mixer, and songwriter for artists such as Lisa Loeb, Jewel and Eric Benet. “I especially dug how this tutorial maintained a clear and approachable way of breaking down the mix, so that both enthusiasts and experts could learn to make cooler sounding mixes in much less time. The bundled mix templates and actual Pro Tools sessions provide us with a wickedly useful 'cheat sheet' or map across Charles' landscape. Now more than ever, I'm impressed by his willingness to invite folks into his bag of tricks.”
“With Mix It Like A Record, Dye has provided a great product and learning tool that is relevant to all interested in making their mixes sound better,” adds multi-platinum producer, engineer, and mixer Ronny Cates. “This DVD is full of useful information and provides an interactive approach for the viewer to try Charles' proven techniques on their own DAW. One of the main thoughts Dye teaches the viewer is that mixes are, and should be, emotional and interactive with the listener. In order for the listener to react emotionally to a song, the mix must be presented in this way."
“Mix It Like A Record is a one of a kind product,” said multi-platinum producer, engineer and mixer Kenny Gioia (Lee Ann Womack, Mandy Moore, Hall & Oates, Aaron Carter). “This DVD is perfect for the beginner, or even the mixing professional who wants a glimpse of how Charles Dye has become one of the most innovative DAW mixers in this ever changing landscape. I highly recommend this product to anyone who mixes or is thinking of mixing on a DAW.”

Top Recording Schools Add MiLaR to Curriculum
Educators tout Mix It Like A Record as indispensable teaching aid
Mix It Like A Record, a popular interactive mixing course authored by Grammy-winning engineer, mixer and producer Charles Dye and produced by Kagi Media, has been added to the curriculum at several well-known recording schools and colleges across the country, and is garnering endorsements from the music industry’s top educators as an excellent resource to teach the subject of mixing, a craft that at one time was seen as un-teachable.
“For years books and magazines have tried to convey the art of mixing,” said Chris Davie, Director of SAE Institute in Miami, engineer and mixer (Vince Gill, George Strait, Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood). “Mix It Like A Record's format goes one step further by bringing the viewer directly into the mix with techniques, discussions and practice sessions. In our educational environment it’s the perfect resource.”
SAE Institute in Miami is a branch of the SAE Institute, the world’s largest recording school with 46 campuses in 22 countries, as well as a Digidesign Sponsored School, and is using Mix It Like A Record in their advanced level audio production courses.
Mix It Like A Record also plays a key role in teaching mixing at The Art Institute of Seattle. The college offers an AAA degree in Audio Production, and audio production is taught at three of the other 30 Art Institutes in North America. According to Steve Barsotti, Academic Director of Audio Production, the school uses the DVD to bring together the concepts of mixing that are dissected throughout the course of a term so that students can experience a professional result in one sitting.
“The students really get a lot out of hearing the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle!) changes that occur within Charles’ plug in chains,” said Barsotti. “This is a field that has a history of learning from observing the masters and our students have benefited from the experience of Charles Dye by using this DVD presentation.”
Barsotti’s colleague at the school Tom Pfaeffle, who teaches several Audio Production courses in addition to his numerous mixing credits with acts like Queensryche, The Black Crows, BB King and Heart, uses the DVD video portion of Mix It Like A Record as a tool to teach students how to compensate for the inherent differences between digital and analog mixing platforms. “The focus on plug-ins and harmonic content are very well presented and leave the mixing engineer with a greater sense of understanding and motivation to create a more harmonically pleasing and musical mix.”
In a different approach, pioneering pro audio educator and founder of Future Rhythm Pro School, engineer, producer and composer Bruce Tambling teaches a mixing course at Foothill College in San Francisco, also a Digidesign Sponsored School, based entirely on Mix It Like A Record. The required “text” is the DVD which students purchase from Foothill’s book store. Tambling breaks up the video chapters over 8 sessions as the curriculum for the class, and installs the accompanying Pro Tools sessions on the 35 student Pro Tools LE / Mac G5 systems to support the very hands-on approach he feels is vital in learning mixing.
“The type of information in Mix It Like A Record was previously available only to people that were fortunate enough to receive an apprenticeship at a major recording studio,” said Tambling. “It would literally take YEARS for a student to gain this much knowledge on their own through trial and error in their own home studios trying to re-invent the wheel.”
Los Angeles based AudioGraph International, the first Spanish Pro Tools Certified Training Center in 1994, is the first English and Spanish, as well as one of the best, Pro Tools Pro Schools in the United States where top engineers, composers, producers and musicians from around the world come to update their knowledge and learn new techniques in digital recording, editing and mixing. One of the school's central courses, "Mixing with Pro Tools", uses both the video portion of Mix It Like A Record for in-class support as well as the Pro Tools sessions for practice assignments.
“Mix It Like A Record is an amazing audio/visual learning tool,” said José “Chilitos” Valenzuela, founder of AudioGraph and author of The Complete Pro Tools Handbook and The Complete Pro Tools Shortcuts, engineer and mixer (Keith Emerson, John Waite, Colin Hay, Tony Kanal). “I use it in a way that allows my students to more easily comprehend and apply specific lessons from class,” said Valenzuela. “I explain it, they watch the chapter on the DVD, and then they do it. It really works!”
“This DVD is much better than a textbook,” added Tambling. “The production quality is excellent and our students find it very engaging, exciting and inspirational. Combined with the included Pro Tools sessions that allow our students to explore every element of the mix for themselves, Mix It Like A Record is by far the best curriculum available for teaching practical mix theory and techniques.”
